- 1788 Vermont Copper. RR-21, Bressett 10-R, W-2155. Rarity-4. Bust Right. Fine-15.
120.8 grains. Deep golden-brown with golden-tan high points. Easy on the eye though low magnification reveals some uniform microgranularity and some tiny pits. Obverse rim tight to tops of ON AUCTO, faint, well-blended scratches on the effigy's portrait, no other marks of consequence, die cud at rim not yet to tip of bust, reverse evenly centered though the rim intersects the bottoms of the date numerals, some faint and well-blended scratches at Liberty's waist area, no marks of merit otherwise, curved die break across Liberty's knees to the 8 of the date is in full bloom here and is diagnostic of Bressett's Reverse R, which is used only in the present die combination in the Vermont copper series. The Carlotto reference notes: "Ryder-21 is one of the tougher 'available' varieties. Specimens above Fine are rare." The weight metrology for the variety runs from about 96.5 grains on the low end to around 122.3 grains at the high end of the range, with the present piece well into the high end of the range. Pleasing to the eye.
PCGS# 563.
