Lot Description
1853 Liberty Seated Quarter. No Arrows or Rays. Briggs 1-A, FS-301. Repunched Date. VF-30 (PCGS). Warm dove gray patina with a smooth appearance in hand, certainly more so than one might expect for a mid grade, early date Liberty Seated quarter. Plenty of bold detail remains. This is a scarce to rare issue in all grades, the limited mintage of 44,200 pieces achieved in two deliveries on February 7 and 19, 1853. As the 1853 No Arrows quarter was struck before the Act of February 21, 1853 reduced the weight of this denomination, most examples were eventually melted for their bullion value. The present example, a handsome Choice VF, is sure to find many willing buyers among advanced Liberty Seated quarter enthusiasts. Provenance: From the William B. Martin Collection. PCGS# 5421. NGC ID: 23TA. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
