- Lot Description
- 1854-S Liberty Double Eagle. VF-30 (PCGS). CAC. Evenly worn deep honey-gold surfaces. Mintmark embedded in tail feathers above. This was the first year of operation of the San Francisco Mint. Emphasis was on turning as much gold into coins as possible, and the double eagle denomination was the ideal way. The two smallest denominations made there that year, the quarter eagle and half eagle, were produced in small numbers and today are notable rarities. In contrast, the 1854-S double eagle is quite collectible.
