Lot Description
1839-O Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. HALF DOL. JR-2, GR-4. Rarity-4. Repunched Mintmark--Medallic Alignment--AU-58+ (NGC). Flashy and bright silver with a dash of honey gold over the obverse and reverse. Rather sharp for this die pairing with all the stars showing their radial lines and Liberty's curls loaded with fluff. On the reverse the eagle shows off his feathers too, with boldness in the strike. As sometimes seen the reverse die was mounted medal turn, a feature seen on other coins of 1839 from the New Orleans Mint, one of the coiners apparently didn't get that memo about using coin turn to mount the dies in the press. Nice surfaces on the obverse and reverse with a few scattered nicks from very brief circulation. Early die state as the cracks are just visible. PCGS# 6181. Provenance: From the Ernest E. Keusch Collection.
