- Lot Description
- 1842 Seated Liberty Half Dollar. Medium Date, Large Letters. WB-106. MS-65 (NGC). The digit 8 in the date is boldly repunched east, and there are also faint traces of a third misplaced 8 in the gown lines to the right of the shield point. These features are diagnostic of the WB-106 variety. Blinding mint radiance in the form of a semi-prooflike finish shines forth powerfully from mostly untoned surfaces. There is toning to report, nonetheless, and it takes the form of very vivid cobalt-blue and reddish-copper iridescence around the obverse periphery. Faint die polish lines in the fields are as struck, but we are compelled to mention a few wispy abrasions on the obverse to the right of the portrait. Fully struck and highly attractive, this piece is solidly in the Condition Census for the Medium Date Guide Book variety of the 1842 Seated Liberty 50C.
