- Unlike the 1857-S, the population of 1858-S got only a minimal boost in availability from the S.S. Central America, preserving very few mint-state examples in existence. Consequently, nicer AU coins still get plenty of attention by collectors. This coin appears nearly choice, possesses very attractive original color, and even shows delicate magenta accents around the major devices.
