Lot Description
Tompkins Die Stage 3/2 (early), Rea et al. Die State a. The Browning-3 variety of the 1836 quarter issue features the only use of both the obverse and reverse dies. While this is a plentiful die pairing in an absolute sense early die state examples, as here, are more challenging to locate than those in later sates from spectacularly cracked dies. The present example is early for Tompkins Reverse Die Stage 2, the crack from the upper border through the right side of the first letter S in STATES to the eagle's right wing not yet extending to the lower border at the digit 2 in the denomination.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: As can be seen, the 1836 quarters are replete with die cracks and the B-3 die marriage encompasses multiple cracks in multiple die stages that culminate in shattered dies on both sides. Most examples found will be of the later die stages, so I snagged this beautiful earlier die stage example when it came to auction.
