- A popular and readily attributable variety, even for this well worn example with the central reverse smooth due to die bulge and a few of the "wheel spoke" breaks around the periphery on that side still discernible. This is also a very scarce Sheldon number, and this piece offers handsome color in dominant medium copper brown. A few moderate marks and shallow edge bruises are noted, mostly for the obverse, reverse with a prominent spot at the lower right border. The legend on the reverse is fully legible, obverse portrait fairly well outlined, LIBERTY and the date are soft yet partially discernible. Sheldon-33 is believed to have been included in the Mint's delivery of cents on March 28, 1794. It is also known as the "Hays variety" since Hays first identified the reverse as new to numismatics in 1888.
