Lot Description
Obv: William Barber's Liberty Seated design with 13 stars around the border and the date 1870 below. Liberty supports a shield with her right hand and holds an olive branch in her left hand. A free standing liberty pole is behind the portrait, and a scroll inscribed LIBERTY crosses the shield. Rev: The same design that the Mint used to strike regular issue Liberty Seated silver dollars of the Motto type. Frosted motifs and reflective fields exhibit an intense array of peach and rose at the obverse center that broadens to deep electric blue through the field to the rim. The reverse exhibits swirls of mint brilliance at the center with a rich display of rose and neon blue dominant toward the periphery. William Barber's design, although similar to the existing Gobrecht Liberty Seated design, offered revisions that apparently did not go far enough to be adopted for coinage.
