- Manley Die State 3.0. Otherwise warmly toned medium and golden-brown surfaces retain appreciable pinkish-red mint color in the protected areas around many of the design elements. This frosty and boldly struck Gem Mint State example is sure to please. One of the most desirable type varieties in the Classic Head half cent series, the 1828 Cohen-3 has an extant population of 5,300 pieces in all grades (per Bill Eckberg, 2019). This total includes at least 1,000 Mint State coins obtained by Washington, D.C. coin dealer Benjamin H. Collins in 1884. While these were still available in roll quantity as late as the 1950s, the coins have since been widely dispersed among collectors and, today, offerings are rarely for more than one at a time.
