Lot Description

Mintage: 1700. 4 graded AU-58, 21 higher at PCGS. Especially rare and desirable as a circulation strike, the 1884 very rarely surfaces near the mint-state level without stepping over the border into "high dollar" territory. Agreeable nickel-grey layers the surface evenly and consistently, revealing not even the slightest distraction. Indeed, with an almost perfect lack of abrasions, one might well have thought this to be a high mint-state example! Alas, very delicate handling hairlines suggest the PCGS grade, but there will certainly be no lack of suitors for such a difficult key.
