- Wayne Miller's Morgan and Peace Dollar Textbook underscores the significance of this offering when the author writes:
The 1901-S is extremely rare in fully prooflike condition. Most advertised "prooflike" 1901-S dollars are lustrous, semi-prooflike pieces. Virtually all prooflikes are very unappealing, with plentiful abrasions, poor contrast, and unappealing gray luster.
With such an introduction it should come as no surprise to also read that the 1901-S has a combined PCGS and NGC population of a mere 10 coins in the DMPL/DPL category. The finest is undeniably the Jack Lee II specimen, PCGS MS-66 DMPL, which most recently appeared at auction in Heritage's January 2024 sale of the David T. Miller #1 PCGS Registry Set of DMPL/PL Morgan Dollars With Varieties, where it realized $33,600. Offered here is the CC#2 coin, the single finest 1901-S certified by NGC in their DPL category. Delicately toned in pale silvery iridescence, both sides readily reveal well-mirrored fields that support softly frosted motifs. There is appreciable cameo contrast to the finish, and none of the "plentiful abrasions" commented upon by Miller. Advanced collectors of prooflike Morgan dollars would be wise to take full advantage of this opportunity - it is our first offering for a DMPL/DPL of this issue that we can recall, and a stunning strike rarity that, once sold, will likely disappear into a tightly held cabinet for years, if not decades.
