- Tompkins Die Stage 1/4, Rea et al. Die State b. Softly frosted to semi-reflective surfaces retain much luster that is readily appreciable given the overall brilliant appearance of the surfaces. Both sides are peripherally toned in golden-apricot iridescence, nonetheless, while a bit of cloudy pinkish-rose color is discernible in the right obverse field. A few faint hairlines are noted for accuracy, but there are no sizeable or otherwise individually mentionable marks. Sharply struck and crisp.
Writing in his 2008 reference on this series, our consignor issues a familiar word of caution regarding the 1835 Browning-7 variety: "Even though this is a common die marriage, finding a choice example in EF to AU will present a challenge." This variety shares its obverse die with the 1835 B-8, but the reverse die is not seen in any other pairing.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: My desire was to buy the best AU coins I could afford, but with the 1835 B-7, I looked high and low for a suitable example at this grade level. I can tell you, they are really difficult to find. That why I was so pleased when this PCGS AU-55 coin showed up at auction.
