Lot Description
Thanks to a particularly large quantity of California gold reaching the Philadelphia Mint that year, the 1853 has the highest circulation strike mintage in the entire Liberty Head quarter eagle series of 1840 to 1907. Circulated examples of this issue are plentiful, but most show evidence of considerable commercial use, if not also numismatic mishandling. At the certified AU-58 grade level the James A. Stack, Sr. specimen is particularly nice. Both sides are sharply struck and lustrous with handsome color in warm honey-orange. The tiny planchet flaw within the obverse denticles below the digit 8 in the date is as made and easily overlooked during in-hand viewing. An endearing Choice AU type candidate in an early date Liberty Head quarter eagle.
