- Obv: The same design that the Mint used to strike regular issue 1864 Liberty Seated silver dollars, although from a different die with the shield point over the left upright of the digit 1 in the date. On all known dies of the regular issue the shield point is entirely left of the date. Rev: The Motto design adopted for regular issue Liberty Seated silver dollar production in 1866. This is a simply outstanding specimen that boasts vivid iridescent undertones of champagne-pink, powder blue, antique gold and reddish-apricot to dominant pewter gray and steel-olive patina. Fully struck with a silky smooth finish that combines softly frosted and modestly semi-reflective qualities.
Although widely regarded as transitional patterns, examples of this type are actually restrikes produced during the late 1860s and early 1870s for sale to collectors. Certain examples of Judd-396, the present specimen included, were actually struck from the same reverse die that the Mint used to coin some pattern and regular issue Proofs of 1871, as indicated by the presence of scribe lines along the denticles outside the letters E in UNITED and ST in STATES. It is entirely possible, therefore, that the present Gem and others from the same reverse die were struck in 1871. Examples of this type were produced in silver, copper, aluminum and nickel, and distributed to contemporary collectors as part of sets that included examples of the other denominations. Only about a dozen examples of Judd-396 are believed extant, and this is the second finest known behind the Simpson coin in PCGS Proof-66.
