Lot Description

Tompkins Die Stage 5/2, Rea et al. Die State d (B-2b), the latest known, Rarity-5+, with a retained cud on the obverse looping from border to border through stars 10, 11, 12 and 13. Glints of charcoal-blue enliven otherwise warmly toned mauve-gray surfaces. Wear is overall light and even, the only mentionable softness confined to the eagle's head, stars and clouds above on the reverse - a typical strike for this variety. Smooth in hand with only a few light handling marks scattered about that require magnification to discern.<p>Browning-2 vies with B-3 as the most readily obtainable die marriage of the 1805-dated quarter issue. Our consignor describes this piece as CC#1 for the die state (B-2b).
