- 147.5 grains. Rich chocolate brown with ideal smooth, glossy surfaces. A nearly perfect coin, choice in visual appeal and technical quality. Both sides are well centered, the fields are essentially immaculate, and we note no issues other than the harmless buildup that has adhered to the interstices of the design while being blessedly left original. We will point out a minuscule mark left of N in UNUM as an identifier. The die state is typical, with the little die chip right of the horse's chest. This is a piece for the picky connoisseurs, as this lovely example of a popular Large Planchet variety will stand up to any kind of scrutiny.<p>This die marriage is common enough that there are a number of high grade examples, including the Norweb-Partrick UNC, an AU+, and six other AU coins listed on the SHI Census of eight total pieces. Syd Martin's AU-58+(PCGS) brought $9,000 in our sale of August 2022; it is ranked third on the census and is the highest grade example we've sold this century. At its grade level, just below the Condition Census, this coin would be very difficult to surpass.
