Lot Description
This is the SOLE FINEST example of this D/S variety. Brilliant nickel luster shines on both sides of this beautifully toned SUPERB GEM. Pastel iridescent rose, gold, olive, and icy blue tones grace the obverse, and a broad swath of gold dominates the right side of the reverse. Well struck throughout. The reverse die began with a S mintmark; then the proper D mintmark was punched over the errant S. PCGS 1, NGC 0, CAC 1. For the entire date, regardless of variety, there are only four coins graded finer. Prior to this coin being certified, the finest to ever sell was a PCGS MS65 which sold for $2,115. In the lofty MS67-grade, PCGS has not assigned a value for the D/S variety-- but they do value a 65 at $2,350. Another point of data is the $10,575 that the MS67+ CAC Angel Dee's coin brought in our December 2016 auction. Advanced collectors of Buffalo nickels cannot afford to miss this opportunity! Good luck! Cert. Number 83204786 PCGS # 3978
