Losbeschreibung
172.8 grains. An unusually nice looking example of this important major variety. Glossy and smooth milk chocolate brown with superb eye appeal on both sides. Some positively trivial planchet flecks, the remnants of fissures that were almost entirely obliterated at the moment of striking, are seen in the obverse fields, but they do not impact the very positive aesthetic presentation. The obverse centering is positively ideal, and the strike is sharp throughout. The reverse is aligned to 8 o'clock with broadest denticles in the northeast quadrant. The die state is fairly early, not quite perfect but showing just a very thin die crack within the ring at 7 o'clock on the reverse. One of the sharpest and prettiest examples we've ever offered, this piece was ranked sixth best by Retz. We know of one similar quality example discovered since Retz wrote (an example identified in a Southern coin shop in 2022), but certainly nothing finer.<p>While there are a number of examples known in the EF range, PCGS has certified an AU on only six occasions, covering both Newman 10-G and Newman 10-T. None are better than AU-55. The remarkable Newman NGC/CAC AU-55 coin, generally acclaimed as finest known, brought $25,850 in 2014. We've sold only two examples of this variety certified at the AU level: the Fricke PCGS AU-55 that brought $26,400 in our sale of November 2021 and an AU-50 (PCGS) CAC example that netted $20,562.50 in our 2014 ANA sale. The really beautiful Retz coin, graded PCGS EF-40, brought $16,450 in our November 2012 auction. Retz ranked his own coin as sixth finest, two spots behind this one.
