- With the Philadelphia and New Orleans mints meeting much of the federal government's need to convert bullion into silver dollars in 1885, the San Francisco Mint delivered only 1,497,000 coins that year. This is a limited mintage by Morgan dollar standards, and with most examples either placed into circulation during the final years of the 19th century or melted under the terms of the 1918 Pittman Act, the 1885-S is relatively scarce, if not rare in all Mint State grades.
