Lot Description

Much scarcer than its identically dated Large Motto counterpart, the 1864 Small Motto has long been considered a key date issue in the two-cent series of 1864 to 1873. This important hub variety is easiest to attribute by looking at the letter D in GOD, which is relatively short with a more rounded (as opposed to oval) shape. Conditionally rare, this premium quality Gem is far more "Red" than "Brown." In fact, otherwise medium orange surfaces reveal only a trace of light rose and gray-brown iridescence that is only readily evident at indirect angles. Razor sharp in strike, with an expectably smooth "look" for the assigned grade.
