- Lot Description
- This is a CHOICE example of this rarity, perhaps only 20 or so are known to survive today. Proofs only were struck of this date, and this variety, B-3, is a restrike, produced in the 1850s or 1860s by the mint for the newly created American numismatic collector community. Sharply struck on both sides, the details are razor sharp from an exacting blow from the dies. The surfaces are deeply toned in a deeper brown and teal-blue overtones add to the outstanding eye appeal. There is some light contact on the high wire rims noted, but they are very minor. PCGS 5, NGC 2. Prior to this coin selling in our May 2021 Regency Auction, the last one sold in June 2020 for $6,600. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $10,500. This is a highly attractive example worthy of a fantastic early copper cabinet. Cert. Number 38668289 PCGS # 1263
