- This is a challenging variety to find with universally bold definition, especially in middle to lower circulated grades, where the biplanar reverse die break results in uneven wear. Indeed, this piece is soft at central reverse, the denomination HALF CENT only faintly legible. The date is also soft with all digits faint to incomplete, but it, too, is legible with patience. Other areas offer considerably bolder detail, and the surfaces present as impressively smooth in the absence of significant marks. Pleasantly toned in light olive-brown, a few swirls of reddish-russet on the reverse are associated with light surface scale, but are out of the way at the border and do not detract. Of the 300 or so coins believed extant from these dies (per Bill Eckberg, 2019), the vast majority grade no finer than EF. This Choice VF example with plenty of eye appeal will catch the eye of astute half cent enthusiasts.
