Lot Description
Strikingly toned in vivid copper-russet, sunset-orange, powder blue, steel-rose and antique gold. The colors are smoothest and most varied along the right reverse border. The 1940 Mercury dime was produced when mintage figures soared to dramatic heights to keep up with the energized pre-World War II economy. 65.3 million dimes were struck in Philadelphia, though that number would explode to 175 million in 1941. While common in all but the very highest grades, the 1940 becomes increasingly scarce at and above the Superb Gem level. With such vivid and attractive toning the offered example is worthy of a particularly strong premium.
