Lot Description
1844-O Liberty Half Eagle. MS-62 (NGC). The present lustrous bright yellow-gold half eagle is an exceptional representative of the date and grade combination. This coin may just as well have been called PL by NGC, for the devices are boldly frosted and the fields are fully reflective -- even the rims are frosted, which adds greatly to the cameo effect. If this were a frosty coin, the few field hairlines that are seen would not show up at all. The strike is sharp throughout with all of Gobrecht's tiny design details present. Rare in Mint State despite its sizable mintage of 364,600 pieces -- no doubt the vast majority of that production saw heavy usage in and around New Orleans. Absolutely choice for the grade and worthy of serious bidding activity.
