- Grellman Die State c. Antique copper-brown patina blankets both sides of this lustrous and glossy piece. Strike detail is bold to sharp throughout, the surfaces with only a few minor marks scattered about that include a tiny nick on the edge of Liberty's neck, just above the end of the bust. A shallow planchet void on the reverse below the letter C in CENT in as made and mentioned solely for accuracy. This is one of the three die marriages of the issue that PCGS groups under the Large/Small 7 variety, although technically only N-2 and N-31 (which share the same obverse die) qualify as such; N-18 is the Large/Medium 7 variety, as described by Bob Grellman (2021). Our July 2015 sale of the celebrated Twin Leaf Collection included an example from the 1847 N-2 dies in PCGS MS-62 BN that realized $2,585. The Widmer Family specimen is finer and worthy of a stronger premium.
