Description du lot
Circa 1793 Washington Success token. First obverse. Musante GW-41, Baker-265A, DeWitt GW 1792-1a. Brass. Plain edge. MS-64 (PCGS). 24.5 mm. 57.7 grains. Light golden olive brass with microscopic speckled toning on both sides. Pleasing undisturbed luster throughout. Typical weakness is seen at the all-seeing eye in the central reverse, but the piece is evenly struck and rather well centered. The usual die break through Washington’s head passes just beneath his eye and extends from rim to rim. A trace of red paint on edge seems to connect this to others in this collection with Baker numbers so added, though this piece is far too thin for anyone to have hoped to form a letter on its edge. These are curious additions and the source is unknown. Provenance: Ex William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897.
