Lot Description
Here is a very cool example of this popular shipwreck issue. With just a the slightest hint of circulation on both sides, this nearly Mint State half eagle sat for over 150 years at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean when the sidewheel steamer, the S.S. Central America sank off the Carolina coast in 1857. This coin, being lightly circulated was likely in the possession of a passenger, and was NOT in the gold-laden cargo. Until the recovery of the S.S. Central America, most known examples were VF or XF. Even still, today AUs are scarce and most came from this historic wreck and are worthy of any great gold coin collection. Cert. Number 34551752 PCGS # 670803
