Lot Description
Finest PCGS-Graded 1788 Horse Head Right New Jersey Copper 1788 New Jersey Copper. Maris 67-v, W-5510. Rarity-1. Horse's Head Right. AU-58 (PCGS). 145.2 grains. One of the finest survivors of Maris 67-v, and afforded the number 4 spot in the Siboni-Howes-Ish condition census of New Jersey coppers. Dark chestnut brown obverse is glossy and mostly smooth, with some shallow planchet depressions around the peripheries, not unusual for this variety. The reverse is by contrast a glossy, smooth medium brown and may be considered ever so slightly prooflike and nearly Mint State. The designs are sharp and complete on both sides, as expected from this normally very well made die combination. Here is a chance to acquire a pretty, high grade, well pedigreed and condition census New Jersey copper that is the single finest graded by PCGS for the Horse Head Right type, a grade also shared by a single example of the 1788 Running Fox type. Provenance: From the Dr. Gordon Shaw Collection. Earlier ex Norweb Collection, Bowers and Merena, October 1987, lot 1378; Stack's Sale of the Estate of Floyd T. Starr, January 1993, lot 1019. PCGS Population: 1; none finer. PCGS# 521.
