Lot Description
1848 Braided Hair Cent. N-36. Rarity-5. MS-62 BN (PCGS). A remarkable example of this distinctive and rare Newcomb number, one of the most crudely prepared die varieties of the Braided Hair cent series. All known examples display severe bluntness to the obverse portrait, stars, and reverse wreath, in addition to clash marks and die sinking. This piece also has some planchet flaws on the obverse -- on the rim outside star 4, above L near the coronet tip, and at Liberty's eye. Lustrous medium-brown with traces of mint red, especially on the reverse. No post-strike marks or flaws of any consequence. One of the finest examples seen, this piece is tied for CC#2 in the Grellman census behind a PCGS MS-63 BN (EAC MS-60) example that is slightly sharper but doesn't have any mint red. A fascinating and impressive coin. PCGS# 406532. NGC ID: 226E. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
