Lot Description: This beautifully toned example exhibits a halo of rose-russet, antique gold and steel-olive peripheral iridescence around a virtually brilliant center on the obverse. The reverse, on the other hand, is toned throughout in a seamless blend of iridescent pinkish-silver, reddish-russet and steel-blue. Both sides deliver strong, full mint luster and impressively sharp strike detail. The first Franklin half dollar with a mintage that surpasses the 10-million coin mark, the 1951 is surprisingly scarce for the type in Mint State despite the fact that 16,802,102 circulation strikes were produced. Clearly these pieces largely served their intended purpose in commerce, with many Mint State coins owing their survival to distribution as part of the year's Mint sets. This is confirmed for the present example by the nature of toning. It is one of the MS-67+ FBL specimens that Rick Tomaska (2023) describes as "Extremely rare," and it is sure to see spirited bidding among advanced specialists in this series.
