- A bright, virtually brilliant example of this very challenging issue. Boldly defined for the grade, both sides retain traces of faint semi-reflective tendencies in the fields. The mintage of the 1849-O was not recorded at the time of production, and numismatists have long suspected that it is included in the 412,000 pieces reported for the 1850-O. Most researchers accept an estimated mintage for this issue of 16,000 pieces, survivors of which are rare to very rare in all grades. As a straight-graded EF-40 at NGC, the present example is rated Rarity-6+ in Larry Briggs' 1991 reference on the Liberty Seated quarter series. Mint State coins are even more elusive, which fact further confirms this piece as one of the finer 1849-O quarters available in today's market.
