- Lot Description
- FROM THE DR. STEPHEN DAVIDSON COLLECTION A very pleasing and sharp B-5, BB-27. Of all the 1795 die pairings, this is the most readily available and easily identifiable with the "bar" behind Liberty's upper curl. The surfaces of this lovely AU55 are highly lustrous, with nearly full original mint luster. There is just a hint of rub on the highest points and in the fields. The devices show nearly complete definition on both sides, with Liberty's hair curls, eye, and star centers boldly and crisply rendered on the obverse while the reverse shows fully defined features, save for where the rub is seen on the eagle's breast feathers; the wings and wreath are full and complete. Virtually untoned with a steely-silver, icy sky blue, and clear gold accents the lustrous surfaces. A strong glass will aid in the location of light lines and some very minor ticks and marks. The eye appeal is well above average for this always popular early type. PCGS 56, NGC 41. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $37,500. We recently sold a PCGS AU53 CAC for $34,075 as part of the Sommelier Collection in May 2021. This is a very pleasing AU55 that will likely sell for more than the most recent PCGS AU55 that sold for $31,200 in November 2020. The Flowing Hair dollar was struck for just two years. First issued in 1794, only 2,000 were struck and some 256 examples were deemed too poorly struck to be issued and were melted down. In 1795, over 160,000 were struck of the Flowing Hair type, before being changed over to the Draped Bust design. As the first silver dollar type produced at the United States mint, they are popular in all grades, from problematic low grade coins to the few GEM Mint State pieces that survived by some miracle. Choice AU pieces are usually the highest grade pieces that most collectors can ever dream of buying. Good luck, bidding will be intense to bring this beauty home. Cert. Number 81284639 PCGS # 6852
