Lot Description

Stellar in both technical and visual qualities, this is one of the FINEST 1909 Proof Barber half dollars ever graded, and is a SUPERB example of the type. Totally original, deep, multi-colored patina is thick, but does not drown out the highly reflective underlying mirrors, which offer a bold, icy flash in the fields. Swirls of blue, gold, peach, orange, rose, and violet bloom all over. The visual allure is something truly special to behold! Only 650 Proofs were struck. PCGS 8, NGC 6, CAC 7. The last one to sell realized $13,800 in January 2019 and prior to that, we sold one for $13,513 in our July 2018 Regency Auction. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $17,500. Just a single coin is graded finer in the non-CAM designation, a PR68+ that has never sold in auction.
