With a mintage of just 36 pieces, this Proof gold dollar is truly a rare coin, and at the assigned grade level it is lovely piece. Rich golden-rose and orange in color with highly reflective fields supporting razor sharp, satiny motifs. The 1880 saw production of the final really low mintage Proof gold issues, so finding a survivor of the year's dollar coinage in this format will prove difficult under normal market conditions. John W. Dannreuther (2018) estimates that only 18 to 22 specimens are extant. This one has been off the market since our (Stack's) 1974 Winter Collection sale, and its acquisition through this offering will represent a coup for the collector who can avoid the potentially very long wait for another specimen.
