1796 S-81 R3 Liberty Cap. PCGS graded AU-55. CAC.Choice glossy medium chocolate brown and steel with frosty lighter brown and tan toning in protected areas. The fields are satiny and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. The only notable marks are a small, curved struck-through line close over the pole near the neck (as struck), three tiny parallel ticks in the field left of the bottom of the cap, and a puff of darker olive brown toning (not carbon) at the R in LIBERTY. LDS, Breen state II, with a fine die crack that arcs from the right top of the Y in LIBERTY into the cheek even with the bottom edge of the eye. The E & N in CENT are softly struck (as nearly always on this variety), but everything else is well defined. A beautiful Liberty Cap cent that is lightly worn on the highpoints. Graded AU50 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #24096. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#4. Our grade is AU50 Choice. And it comes with a provenance that has been traced back over 140 years. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 4; 1 finer in 63.(PCGS # 35750) Value $15,000 - UP
