This peripherally toned beauty also displays bold frosty luster and smartly impressed, expertly preserved surfaces. Like so many mintmarked Barber quarters, the 1902-S suffered a high rate of attrition through circulation and can be challenging to locate even in grades such as EF and AU. The mintage of just 1,524,612 pieces also contributes to the rarity of Mint State 1902-S quarters, especially those at the higher levels of Gem preservation, as here.
