- Rare and desirable Choice Mint State quality for this dramatic RPD variety from the first year of the United States Mint's nickel five-cent series. The surfaces are lightly toned in a dusting of pinkish-silver and champagne-pink, both sides also with a full endowment of soft mint luster. All four digits in the date are widely repunched, confirming this as a popular naked eye variety for the sharp-eyed numismatist. The 1866 FS-302 is also rare in Mint State, the present example tied for CC#2 among certified pieces. Our last offering for this variety was in August 2021, when the Q. David Bowers Collection specimen in NGC MS-65 (non-CAC) realized an impressive $9,000. This is another exciting and fleeting bidding opportunity for the specialist.
