- FROM THE PERFECTION COLLECTION OF CAPPED BUST HALF DOLLARS Ex Green/Newman, as noted on the insert. What a lovely and CHOICE way to begin the Perfection Collection. The mint struck two distinct half dollar types in this transitional year; the last year of the Draped Bust design and the first year of John Reich's new Capped Bust design. This endearing design was struck with a lettered edge on a screw press from 1807-1836, and is among the most passionately collected series in all of American numismatics. Four die pairs were utilized to strike 750,500 examples. Mint State examples of this variety are few and far between, PCGS has graded just 10 Mint State coins in total, with just two finer. Indeed, while listed first in the set, this was the last coin Mr. Perfection needed to complete this set, attesting to the challenging nature of the date to find with the right "look." Bold rainbow iridescent rings halo about the lustrous silver untoned centers. Light lines, perhaps indicative of an ancient, very light cleaning explain the assigned grade (and not being CAC approved), but the eye appeal is bold and this coin is among the finest certified of the Small Stars variety. Adding to that eye appeal is the crisp strike, with nearly all the details fully formed. The eye appeal is truly amazing for the assigned grade. The O-113 offered here is traditionally been referred to and listed as the Small Stars obverse. It was determined in the cataloging of the D. Brent Pogue Collection, that the O-113 and O-114 Small and Large Stars are actually the same size; the subtle difference in placement and rotation of the stars created an optical illusion and it was not until digital photos were rotated and overlayed that this discovery was made. Ex. Col. E.H.R. Green Collection; Green Estate; St. Louis Stamp & Coin (partnership of B.G. Johnson and Eric P. Newman); Eric P. Newman; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society; Heritage, November 2013, lot 33435 (as NGC MS63); Our Regency Auction XVIII, September 2016, lot 318; David Lawrence Rare Coins, June 2017 Internet Auction #966. PCGS 4, NGC 1. In its most recent appearance, this CHOICE example realized $34,500 and the current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $30,000. Just two coins are listed finer at PCGS, both MS65+; the Pogue-Chicago example, the most recent to sell in auction, realized a strong $108,688 in our September 2021 Regency Auction. This is a grand opportunity for the advanced collector to add a Condition Census example of a somewhat scarcer die pairing to a fantastic cabinet. Bid accordingly. Cert. Number 81333931 PCGS # 39359
