1741-BB Sou Marque. Strasbourg Mint. Vlack-253a. Rarity-6. AU-58+ (PCGS). 31.6 grains. An intriguing piece, thought by Syd Martin to possibly be a contemporary counterfeit, this due to the misshapen BB mintmark and extensive crumbling at the S in SIT that makes that letter appear to be cut over an inverted 3. The final digit 1 in the date and the letter O in NOM are repunched, and crumbling engages several other peripheral features on the obverse. Brightly lustrous and minimally toned, with full silvering and a sharp strike. Likely a genuine product of the Strasbourg Mint in your cataloger's (JLA's) opinion, and a beautiful near-Mint example of both the type and issue. Provenance: From the Sydney F. Martin Collection.
