1854 Round 50 Cents. BG-425. Rarity-7-. Liberty Head. AU-58 (PCGS). A significant highlight of the Oregon Collection, this beautiful and fully original example exhibits iridescent undertones of blue-gray and pinkish-rose, as well as warmer patina in a blend of honey-olive and deep rose. Plenty of satiny luster remains, and the detail is suitably bold for the variety. BG-425 is a noteworthy rarity in this series, the Bob Leonard census of 2003 listing 13 examples, including a damaged VF example and perhaps one duplication. The PCGS CoinFactsestimate is "10 to 12 known." This near-Mint example rivals most that have been offered at auction in recent years, including the Jay Roe specimen that was certified AU-55 by PCGS in our (Bowers and Merena's) September 2003 sale. Sure to see spirited bidding among specialists. Unusual for an M. Deriberpie product, this variety lacks the maker's familiar D mark on either side. Provenance: From the Oregon Collection. PCGS Population: 4; 5 finer (MS-63 finest). PCGS# 10461. NGC ID: 2BKG. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
