- 1821 Matron Head Cent. N-1. Rarity-1+. Noyes Die State A. AU-58 (PCGS). Deep golden tan surfaces, hard and glossy, and not heavily marked though we must note a shallow gouge at the second 1 in the date. Strong design elements present where boldly struck, but some lightness in the obverse stars. A popular semi-key date, especially in a high circulated grade as offered here. From a mintage of 389,000 pieces, a modest figure when you consider that the dates 1816-1820 were all produced in the <em>millions</em> of pieces, as were all of the dates in the design type that came afterward except for 1823, the key to the type. Elusive when found so fine, and certain to bring a round of bold bidding activity among collectors and specialists alike.
