Lot Description
1853-DERI Octagonal $1. BG-519. Rarity-4-. Liberty Head. MS-64 (PCGS). Soft satin surfaces are lightly struck in areas, yet nicely preserved with a silky smooth appearance to vivid golden-yellow patina. BG-519 is the most frequently encountered octagonal gold dollar type produced by M. Deriberpie. Two examples were discovered with the treasure of the S.S. Winfield Scottshipwreck, confirming both the 1853 date of issue and the fact that this type was produced for commercial use. Provenance: From United States Coin Company's sale of February 20, 1917; our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Virgil M. Brand Collection, Part II, June 1984, lot 1583. Bowers and Merena lot tag included. PCGS Population: 4; 2 finer (both MS-65). PCGS# 10496. NGC ID: 2BLH. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
