1843-C Liberty Quarter Eagle. Large Date. Winter Variety 1 (5-D). AU-50 (NGC). 1873 Liberty Quarter Eagle. Close 3. AU-50 (PCGS). Mostly olive-gold iridescence with wisps of mint brilliance visible around the stars, lettering and digits in the date. The surfaces are essentially devoid of the fissures and flaws that seem so typical of many Southern branch mint gold issues of the era. Most design features are sharp for the grade. Probably no more than 1% of the original mintage of 23,076 pieces is extant in AU-50 and higher grades, confirming the conditionally rare nature of this 1843-C LD quarter eagle.
