Lot Description
Lot 150 1814 S-295 R1 Plain 4. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. CAC.Lustrous mint red fading to steel brown on the highpoints with nearly half the original bright mint color remaining on both sides. The "reddest" 1814 we have seen retaining more original mint color than any 1814 of either variety in the Noyes census. Would be a gem if not for some wisps of darker toning (not carbon) on the left side of the obverse and tiny specks of similar toning on both sides. The only trace of carbon is a small spot nestled inside the bottom of the N in ONE. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and there are no contact marks. E-MDS, Breen state IV, with a fine die crack that arcs from star 11 through the lowest curl to the left top of the 8. Our grade is MS64, same as the PCGS assessment. A wonderful 1814 cent. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer and the only RB graded at PCGS.(PCGS # 36518) Value $40,000 - UP Ex Heritage Auctions 2/2017:4009-Douglas F. Bird Collection (lot ticket included).
