Lot Description
THE SOMMELIER COLLECTION Ex Gerrie Collection, as noted on the insert. An incredible near-GEM example of this early large cent. Though a common variety, listed as Rarity-1, this piece is clearly in the Condition Census, listed in Walter Breen's Large Cent Encyclopedia as #2, and boasts a very impressive provenance, including such large cent luminaries as: Dr. William Sheldon, Dorothy Paschal, John Adams, Dennis Loring, and Ted Naftzger. Right there, you should instantly know how impressive this S-140 is. Sharply struck from a late die state, Breen's state VII. As noted on the accompanying collector envelope, "Very late dies; heavy swelling and clashing." Breen notes that it has three obverse planchet defects, noted on the envelope as being "cracked and flaking. The surfaces are deeply toned in a dark brown with a brilliant glossiness on both sides. The visual appeal is excellent. Ex Charles R. Matthewson, 1955; Copley Coin Co.; Dr. William Sheldon; Dorothy Paschal; John W. Adams; Dennis Loring; Stephen Brown; Dennis Loring; John Wood (July 3, 1980); Roy E. "Ted" Naftzger Collection; Eric Streiner; intermediaries; Roy E. "Ted" Naftzger Collection, Goldberg's, September 2008, lot 174; Paul Gerrie Collection; our consignor. PCGS 37, NGC 5. This piece last sold at auction in September 2008 for $14,375--that was forever ago. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $25,000. An important coin that has a great look and important pedigree! Bidding will be strong for sure. Cert. Number 26773115 PCGS # 1422.00
