- Lot Description
- Attractively toned with vivid reddish-russet and blue gray peripheral highlights to otherwise silver-mauve surfaces. The 1866-S is the premier San Francisco Mint quarter of the Liberty Seated type with Motto, and it is a key date issue in all grades with a mere 28,000 coins struck. Most survivors are concentrated in the Good to VF range, often with significant impairments from having been roughly handled in commerce in the Old West. Larry Briggs (1991) assigns an impressive Rarity-5 rating to EF and AU examples, the present offering certainly among our finest for the issue in quite some time.
