- 72.2 grains. Struck from an advanced state of these dies, later than both of the Ford coins, comparable to the die state of the primary Hain coin, ex NN's 60th Sale. Die failure has resulted in the faint, partially indistinct oak tree at central obverse, while the reverse is badly broken with a sizeable piece out of the die at and below the digit 2 in the date and second Roman numeral I in the denomination. Both sides are well centered, obverse border only lightly into the tops of most peripheral letters, upper reverse border similarly into the tops of the letters, but those from 3 to 11 o'clock are fully on the flan. Otherwise bright golden-gray surfaces exhibit warmer olive highlights on the reverse. Lightly cleaned at one time, a somewhat muted appearance further explains the BU grade assigned by NGC. No sizeable post-production blemishes are seen.<p>In terms of certified grade this is one of the finest Noe-7 Oak Trees that we have ever offered, and certainly in recent years. Both Ford coins are nicer, of course, but the Kendall specimen in our March 2015 Baltimore Auction is clearly lower grade in its PCGS EF-40 holder; the extensive Syd Martin cabinet lacked this Noe number entirely. Whether you are a high grade colonial era type collector or advanced specialist in Massachusetts Bay Colony silver, this represents a significant find worthy of serious consideration.
