- Description du lot
- If the Deep Cameo specimen in the preceding lot proves elusive, the present offering for a premium Gem Cameo 1898 will certainly be just as desirable to advanced collectors of Proof Liberty Head gold. This is a lovely coin dressed in warm medium gold color that appears to darken considerably in the fields when the surfaces turn away from direct lighting. The same areas reveal subtle orange peel texture when viewed under magnification - the result of the Mint overheating the planchets during the annealing process. There are no handling marks or other blemishes of note, and with a full, razor sharp strike and bold field to device contrast this delightful specimen is worthy of the strongest bids. JD Die State b, when evidence of relapping clearest around the letters in the word STATES on the reverse. Proofs of this issue were delivered at multiple times during the year, and the Mint clearly thought it necessary to freshen up the dies at some point. The present example was included among the later deliveries.
