Lot Description
Attractive Cameo Proof 1872 Three-Dollar Gold Just 30 Struck 1872 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. Proof-64 Cameo (NGC). Frosty orange-gold devices and mirrored fields form a pleasing cameo contrast on both sides. A hint of cloudiness is seen in the obverse field before Liberty's profile, otherwise no disturbances are visible to the unassisted eye. This rare prize is a survivor from a Proof mintage for the date of just 30 pieces, with somewhat fewer than that number in today's numismatic circles. By way of comparison, the Proof 1872 $3 we offered in our (Bowers and Merena) sale of the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection (May 2000:279) was graded Proof-64 by PCGS, though at a time when the third-party grading firms did not yet recognize the Cameo designation. A choice specimen that should be seen to be appreciated. PCGS# 8035. NGC Census: 7; 2 finer within the Cameo Proof designation (Proof-66 Cameo finest).
